We’re so excited to introduce our February Scrub Superstar, Libby! Libby is from Pembroke Pines, Florida. She went to Boston University for undergrad and studied Neuroscience, then continued on to Barry University in South Florida for her Masters in Biomedical Sciences. Now she is currently studying at Nova Southeastern University for her DMD. Dentistry was always her goal and we’re proud to showcase our first student Scrub Superstar! Read more about her and her career path below.

What is your current position?

Currently, I am a 3rd-year student in the NSU Dental program. I am a part of the American Student Dental Association and hold the Lunch and Learn Chair position. I organize programs and lunches for different dental vendors to come in and speak to the students. I am also the VP of Alpha Omega, which is an international dental fraternity.

Why did you choose to go to school for this particular career?

Growing up, I loved going to the dentist. Very strange, I know. I actually initially wanted to be a hygienist. But my mom guided me to grow further and become a doctor – so that’s the direction I went in.

What do you love about your career?

I think what I love most about this field is helping the patients to be more confident and giving them the smile they always wanted. There is so much depth that goes into dentistry. It is both science and an art combined.

What is one of your favorite on-the-job memories?

I would say going on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic with the NSU Mission Club. We provided dental services for the under-served community there for one week, each day at a different site. They were all so appreciative. There were huge lines of people waiting just so they could be relieved of tooth pain. This trip really helped me grow as a person. Just to see how much need there is in the world, it was very emotional.

What is your favorite snack to keep your energy up?

I usually go towards coffee because it is quick and easy. But if I choose a snack, I would say an energy bar or a banana.

What do you do to relax after classes?

After school, I like to relieve stress by going to a boxing gym. I also love going to the movies and hanging out with family to get away from the stress of school. This is my 8^th year of school post grade school. I am very involved in the clubs I mentioned and we host events on the weekend. My fraternity Alpha Omega does an Oral Cancer 5K walk every year and I take great pride being involved in that. All money raised goes towards a patient in need of funds for their treatment.

Finally, what feature is most important to you while choosing your scrubs?

I’d say the most important feature is the softness and texture of the fabric. I’ve been wearing Grey’s Anatomy but I keep seeing all of my friends wearing Butter-Soft so I am excited to try them out.
