What is your current position?
I am an Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist working in an outpatient clinic in Sunny Isles Beach, FL. About five years ago I moved from my hometown, Buffalo, NY to South FL to start my career path.
Why did you choose this particular career?
When I first started college, I got injured. I was initially going to school for architecture. But because of my injury, I had to go through a lot of therapy and that’s what really sparked me and helped me figure out that I wanted to be around people and positively help them. I knew I didn’t want to deal with feet and because my injury was my shoulder, I decided to specifically study and treat hand, elbow, and shoulder injuries. I really love my job. If you love what you do, going to work isn’t hard.
What advice would you give someone pursuing this career path?
My main advice would be to make sure that you are doing it for the right reason, it isn’t only about the paycheck. What you do, the things you say, your energy, and even your body language, all impact your patients. If you are passionate and in it 100 percent, you will excel. If you are just doing it for a paycheck, don’t come into this field.
What do you love about your career?
The best thing about my job is getting to know and interact with my patients. They become family. When they come in for the first time and then start making progress, I really enjoy giving them just a small sense of hope that they can get better. I love getting feedback and hearing about how they’re reaching their goals.
What is one of your favorite on-the-job memories?
I had a patient that had been to a lot of therapy places in different states because she moved a lot. She came in and told us you are my last try. I reassured her and told her to just work with us and to give me a chance. She told me over and over again that doctors had told her, ‘there is nothing you can do, you are just getting old.’ She said, ‘I am not and I am healthy.’ After we had worked together and made progress she wrote me the nicest letter I’ve ever received. Telling me that I was the only person who proved everyone wrong and said that I changed her life and how she does things.
I am not doing her letter justice, but she said she couldn’t thank me enough. That was one of my favorite moments knowing I could help someone to that extent.
What are some of your favorite activities outside of work?
I really love the outdoors, biking, kayaking, and paddle boarding – some of the many reasons I moved to Florida with my boyfriend. I also like to play with my therapy dog, Miley.
Finally, what feature is the most important to you while choosing your scrubs?
I like them fitted but still comfortable so I can move. I like soft, flexible, and fashionable scrubs that are not boxy like potato sacks. Where I work we wear solid colors and navy blue is our standard color.
Is there anything else you’d like to add or say?
For anyone else in this life, do what you love. Everything around you will fall into place. I have been very blessed. If you want to get into OT/CHT profession or if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me or reach out to me. I enjoy helping, teaching, and in the process learning more myself. I’d also like to thank UA for this opportunity and for featuring me as their Scrub Superstar!
