We are ecstatic to introduce our December Scrub Superstar: Kelly! Kelly has years of experience as a dental assistant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Find out more about this month’s Scrub Superstar below!

What is your current position? 

I work as a dental assistant in Philadelphia. I have worked at a general practice for the last six years. But I have been a dental assistant for twelve years. I’ve worked in both general practices and specialists.

Why did you choose this particular career?

I chose this career because I love making people smile and giving them the best care that I can possibly give them.

What advice would you give someone pursuing this career path?

The advice I would give to someone that is thinking of being a dental assistant is to make sure you go into a general practice. And to learn as much as you can with a sturdy overview. You don’t want to go directly into a specialty. I think it is best to learn about everything because no matter what, you’ll need to know it all. Patients, in particular, want to know why and if you have those answers, they will love that you give a detailed explanation.

What do you love about your career?

I love helping each and every one of my patients.  It doesn’t matter how scared or impolite they are; I really enjoy giving them the best smile we can give them. If they are currently unhappy with how their teeth look or have questions, I want to make sure they leave with all the answers. And make sure our patients get the appointments they need to get their smile the way they want it.

What is one of your favorite on-the-job memories?

My favorite memory is when we were able to help a 93-year-old woman get the smile she always wanted. We did 6 implants with a screwed retained denture. Afterward, she told our office that she felt like a young woman again. Every time she comes in for a check-up now, she always says that.

What are some of your favorite activities outside of work?

My favorite activities outside of work are spending time with my kids, whether it is taking them to the playground, sports, or the movies. And also some alone time with the husband. I love to decorate the house for the holidays, with different things and something new every year. I like to go to the movies and go out with friends when I can. I don’t have too many hobbies anymore because I am working full-time, and taking care of my kids and taking them to play their sports. I don’t have too much time for myself. I used to love baking cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, and taffies.  I still bake for the kid’s schools and the teachers love what I come up with. I do miss it, maybe one day I will start baking again.

Finally, what feature is the most important to you while choosing your scrubs?

The most important thing about my scrubs is that they’re fun and different. I love the holiday prints especially, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, Christmas, and Winter are some of my favorite ones. I always get something different and fun but never any with pink or purple. Kids love when I wear my character ones too! Plus, I love my autism print top that I wear for my youngest son.
