What is your current position?
I am a Registered Nurse on the post-op surgical floor of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. I work the night shift, so I have three days on and four days off.
Why did you choose this particular career?
I chose nursing because I wanted to be in the HealthCare field and I’ve always wanted to help people. I like being able to give people the best care possible, especially when they are sick.
I especially like working with children – they bring a lot of joy to the floor. Even though they are sick, they still bring a smile and it’s heartwarming.
What do you love about your career?
I learn a lot of new things every day and I can really help people in the 12 hours I am there. I get to help kids get back to the best health possible. Some patients are in and out in a couple of days and some are there for months. I try to ensure both the kids and parents feel comfortable and have a good experience.
Plus, all of the staff helps each other out and makes sure everything is in order. Once a Child Life Specialist brought a Wii to a patient’s room to cheer him up.
What is one of your favorite on-the-job memories?
I had a five-year-old patient who thanked me for helping him out throughout his stay. It was gratifying to know that he wasn’t in pain and that he would be going home happy. Getting this feedback ensures I’m in the right career.
What do you eat during a long shift to keep you energized?
I definitely drink coffee. Plus, I eat dark chocolate covered blueberries to help keep me awake.
What do you do to relax after a long shift at the hospital?
I sleep as much as I can and catch up on all my TV shows. I also spend time with my friends when I can.
Finally, what feature is the most important to you while choosing your scrubs?
Comfort – for pants especially, since I’m tall. Sometimes finding the right length is challenging. Plus, it gets cold in the hospital, so my jacket is also important.
Thank you Shamira for all that you do for your patients and for sharing your experiences with us!
That is awesome I also work the night shift Thanks for all you do.
