National Veterinary Technician Week is October 12-18 this year. It was first celebrated in 1993 to recognize those medical professionals who are a crucial part of everyday operations for veterinary practices and is celebrating its 21^st year in 2014! These individuals are natural animal lovers who, along with the veterinarians they work with, provide the necessary and compassionate care for the health and welfare of their animal patients. According to NAVTA’s President, Dennis Lopez, M.Ed., LVT, he was quoted in the Veterinary E-News Magazine saying “The credentialed veterinary technician is so much more than an assistant to the [veterinarian].” “The public is often uninformed about the importance of the veterinary nursing staff behind the scenes, working long shifts in the treatment rooms of animal clinics and hospitals. Our view at NAVTA is that the veterinary technician is an extension of the doctor, performing many critical nursing tasks in support.”

Along with recognizing Veterinary Technicians, this week is also about other activities too:

• Educate the public about what Veterinary Technicians do
• Reinforce the value and professionalism of Veterinary Technicians
• Provide an opportunity for Veterinary Technicians to encourage one another for excellent work ethic and team building
• Acknowledge their quality relationships with other veterinary professionals

Not all Veterinary Technicians are employed in clinical settings. There are also opportunities in:

• Education
• Humane societies
• Zoos and wildlife parks
• Military
• Research
