Caring for your New Medical Scrubs

July 21, 2008

Tired of your scrubs fading and just looking dingy? It may be the type of scrubs you are buying or it may be the style in which you are washing them. To ensure a great fit and long lasting uniform, we recommend that you be selective in the quality of the fabrics as well as the style in which you launder them, so your medical scrubs last as long as possible.

We recommend that you invest your money in some high quality medical uniforms, like UA Scrubs, Butter Soft Scrubs, Landau Scrubs, Cherokee Uniforms, or Dickies Medical Scrubs. Not only are they more comfortable and stylish, but are made with some of the best fabrics in the marketplace today.

Washing your Nursing Uniforms:

Washing with care is the key to long lasting garments, so it is not recommended to use harsh or cheap detergents, because the fabric may not hold up over time. It is best to use a good quality detergent to clean your medical uniforms. It is also recommended to wash them separately from regular laundry to keep the spreading of germs to your non work clothes down to a minimum.

Rinsing your scrubs in cold is recommended to loosen any large deposits of material such as dirt, blood, or anything else that may linger in the wash cycle and make a mess of the water. Once you are finished rinsing, the garments should be then washed in hot water for about 10 minutes or so to kill bacteria as well as micro organisms. After washing, tumble dry your clothes to kill off additional germs.

If your medical uniform has an odor, simply use some vinegar. I would say ¼ to ½ cup is fine. And it is safe for the fabric. You can even use a color brightener or white wash to bring back the brilliance of the fabric, but do not use bleach because products with bleach may damage your fabric over time.

A warning here: High heat in washing and tumble drying will help to sanitize your hospital uniforms, but may also cause fading, shrinkage, and fabric loss over time. Some folks have opted to wash their medical scrubs in cold water and line dry. The choice is up to you and only you can determine what germs you may have come in contact with. Happy washing!

Your comments are important to us, so please let us know of any secrets you have come across to get your medical scrubs clean, bright, and germ free. We look forward to posting your comments.
