Will women ever reduce the Glass Escalator effect?

The “glass ceiling,” a term used to describe women’s inability to advance in their career and receive equal pay as men solely because of their gender, has plagued working women for decades. Although we are now living in a society where we are seeing more and more professional, career women, a very large inequality gap still exists. In fact, women currently earn 77% of what a man does for the same job with the same qualifications — a relatively small increase from the 64% that women would earn in 1951 according to infoplease.com. To put it simply, a women earns 77 cents for the same job that a man would do for a dollar.glass

But what about in female-dominated professions, such as teaching and nursing? Do women who work in these professions still experience the salary and career-advancement inequality as other women in different industries do? The answer, alarmingly, is yes. The “glass escalator” describes this phenomenon perfectly: Men who work in female-dominated professions are more likely to advance faster and further in their career, as well as receive higher pay. Many women that work as hard or even harder than men continue to struggle to advance as some men “glide by” on this intangible glass escalator. According to Caren Goldberg, Ph.D., an assistant professor of management who has studied this phenomenon at American University’s Kogod School of Business, “Men that enter female-dominated professions tend to be promoted at faster rates than women in those professions.”

To put some reason behind these staggering facts, many higher-ups and managers feel less inclined to promote women on the basis of career interruptions, such as raising a family. In addition, typical managerial and boss stereotypes typically match the qualities of a stereotypical man, such as assertiveness, which perpetuates this cycle. This societal stereotype that works to the benefit of men continues to place a stigma upon most working women, even those who do not have a spouse or children.

What do you think of the glass escalator? Have you ever experienced job inequality in your workplace?

UA goes Hollywood

Uniform Advantage goes Hollywood…

Uniform Advantage’s print scrub top made a star appearance with Cate Blanchett, Oscar winning actress in the highly acclaimed Blue Jasmine Movie that aired last year in July 2013.

Gorgeous Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for Best Actress in her performance in Blue Jasmine, filmed in August 2012. The budget for the film was $18 million and it grossed around $95 million worldwide.

Cate Blanchett plays the character of Jasmine French, a New York socialite with a wealthy lifestyle. Her marriage and entire life fell apart when her husband’s deceptive business practices came to light. With no one to help her, single and broke, she moves in to live with her estranged sister, Ginger, in San Francisco to get back control of her life. At this point, she is unstable mentally and emotionally and in putting her life back to pieces, she gets a job unwillingly as a receptionist in a dental office.

Her work wardrobe included Uniform Advantage’s Mix It Up Cougar mock wrap scrub top from their Butter-Soft collection. “Mix It Up Cougar” was designed to resemble a cougar’s spots. The style included the side drawstring tie and was 55/45 cotton poly blend. It was part of Uniform Advantage’s Spring/Summer 2012 lineup and featured fashionable shades: coffee bean, cougar and pineapple. The mock wrap scrub top featured a trendy geo print that was the “in” style two years ago and still is today.

Uniform Advantage is constantly designing a wide variety of fresh and stylish printed designs for their exclusive UA Uniform collections, the number one place for scrubs and all of your nursing uniform needs. Earth Day Tips: Packing a Healthier, Zero Waste Lunch

This is a guest blog by WildMintShop.com

Tuesday, April 22 this year is “Earth Day,” a day when people around the globe get together to bring awareness to environmental issues and promote greater appreciation of the planet. There are thousands of steps, big or small, one can take to help protect our planet, and today we wanted to focus on a topic we know everyone can relate to—food! As busy health professionals, we know it’s probably hard to find time to pack lunch, yet, ordering takeout, eating in the cafeteria, or constantly going out for lunch aren’t necessarily the most cost-effective or healthiest options. That’s why we’re here to help you change up your lunch routine while going green! At Wild Mint, we are dedicated to helping families live healthier, safer, and more earth-friendly lifestyles, so we’ve put together some of our favorite tips to help you pack a healthier, zero waste lunch for work.

There are two main areas you can focus on to help pack a healthier lunch: the food you pack and the containers you use to pack your food.  First, trying to pack whole, fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables, lean meats, nuts, legumes, and grains are of course better for your health than eating processed foods and those high in saturated fats.  But another thing to remember is that research shows organic foods are higher in nutrients (vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals) and free from many of the toxic pesticides used in regular foods.  To help you shop for organic foods on a budget, check out the Environmental Working Group’s Shoppers Guide to see the best foods to try to buy organic.

Now that you’re packing healthier foods, it’s time to consider your food containers. Did you know that chemicals in some items including lunch bags, plastic containers, utensils, plastic baggies, and water bottles can actually leach into your food and drink? These toxic chemicals (including Bisphenol-A or BPA, phthalates and PVC’s, and lead) can have a short or long term effect on people’s health including diabetes, obesity, heart disease, worsening allergy and asthma symptoms, impaired intellect, and some cancers. To help you avoid any potential health consequences from using products made with toxic chemicals, switch to non toxic, reusable lunch-packing gear made from glass, stainless steel, organic cotton, and bamboo.

Packing your lunch in reusable products is also a great way to reduce waste in the environment. According to RecycleWorks.org, a person who uses a disposable lunch creates between 4-8 ounces of garbage everyday, which can add up to as much as 100 pounds per year! That’s a lot of garbage by just one person that is polluting the air and oceans. Additionally, plastics, which are used to make so many disposable lunch gear items, take centuries to decompose and if incinerated in the process, release toxic byproducts into the atmosphere.

PCSOW028                  Below are 4 ways to help you pack the perfect zero-waste lunch:MSWB8056

1)      Pack a Reusable Lunch Bag: Look for a reusable lunch bag free from toxic chemicals like lead, PVCs, phth alates, and BPA. If you’re looking for the most eco friendly option, opt for a bag made completely from 100% organic cotton, which is grown without the use of pesticides and has lower environmental impacts than conventional cotton.

2)      Store Healthy Food in Reusable Containers: As discussed, glass, stainless steel, and organic cotton are all toxin-free alternatives to plastic that also promote healthier eating by conscious food preparation. Pack healthy sandwiches, meals, veggie sticks, yogurt, fruit, and more nutritious options in safer glass food storage containers and stainless steel food containers. Replace plastic baggies with reusable sandwich bags and reusable snack bags which will save money in the long run and help reduce waste!

3)      Sustainable Utensils & Napkins: Reusable bamboo utensils are an Eco-friendly alternative to plastics, much lighter then packing silverware, and super cute! With napkins, opt for reusable 100% organic cotton instead of paper napkins that add unnecessary waste to landfills.

4)      Reusable Beverage Bottles: Plastic water bottles, juice boxes, soda cans, and other disposable drinks can contain unhealthy ingredients, toxic chemicals, and of course contribute to waste. Instead, use reusable glass water bottles or stainless steel water bottles filled with water and other healthy beverages. We love Lifefactory water bottles for glass and Klean Kanteen bottles for stainless steel.

We hope these tips have been helpful and informative in learning about toxin-free, earth friendly lunch packing. For some ideas on healthy lunch and snack options visit our Recipe Section and to learn more about healthy, safer living visit our Learn Section.

Top Tips to Help You in Your Job Search

This is a guest post by UA Brands.

Does the thought of dragging out your old resume and spending hours hunting the job boards seems like a daunting task? If you’re like most nurses, the answer is probably “yes”. Who wouldn’t be tired after spending all day on your feet dealing with patients, emergencies, and trying to find time to eat something in-between?

Here at UA Brands, we are passionate about helping top talented job seekers find the job that fits them perfectly! We know how much better it feels to be working in a job that’s a great fit and in a company that you feel at home.
With that in mind here are some of our top tips that will help you prepare for your job search and help you along the way!

• Make sure that your resume is proofread by a friend or family member who has excellent grammar and spelling skills. Your resume is all about putting the best of you on paper and you want your skills and experience to shine through, not a spelling or grammar mistake!

• Tailor your resume and cover letter to the job you are applying for. Although it can be easy to make a generic resume and apply to hundreds of jobs, take those few minutes and tailor your resume and cover letter to touch on points that were mentioned in the job description. It makes a big difference when we see a candidate has put in the extra effort.

• Do your research beforehand! If you get called in for an interview or a phone interview, do your research on the company! If you really want to wow the interviewer and set yourself apart, do some research on the interviewer. Nowadays, with the internet and LinkedIn, it’s so easy to find information about companies and their employees.

• Speaking of LinkedIn…create a profile! LinkedIn is a key social media site that recruiters often use to find top talent. In 2012 – 92% of US companies stated that they have used social media networks to find potential employees and 73% of US companies have successfully hired a candidate through social media.*

• Prepare your own interview questions about the job, the company and culture, and even about the interviewer themselves. It shows interest and excitement over this position and can give you an edge over other candidates.

• Always say “thanks”! Sending a short note via email to your interviewer and anyone you met, is a great way to keep your name in their minds! Try to send it 2-3 days after the interview. If you don’t hear back after your thank you note, it is appropriate to send a follow-up email after a week.
