What Koi print do I belong to?

February is a busy month!  Not only is it National Heart Month but it is also National Cancer Prevention Month.  What are the top ways to prevent cancer from the American Institute of Cancer Research?

• Food: Limit red meat (especially processed meat like ham, bacon, sausage, and hot dogs), and pour on the fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and beans!
• Fit: Not everyone’s schedules or budget allow them to hit the gym with a personal trainer every night, that’s ok!  Do your best to get at least 30 minutes in a day (whether it’s jogging, vacuuming/cleaning, or dancing with your kids just try and get your heart rate up-up-up.
• Figure: Did you know that carrying extra weight increases your odds of developing SIX types of cancers!? So conquer the first two and you will surely see results…then increase the physical activity as needed but remember it can be broken up throughout the day whenever you have time!

Uniform Advantage is “Going Red” today for Women’s Heart Health and officially kicking off our February fundraising efforts for the National Heart Month and the American Heart Association!  Here are some facts about the prevalence of heart disease and why you should get involved:

• Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, regardless of race or ethnicity, accounting for 8.6 million deaths in women each year
• One in THREE women over the age of 20 has a form of cardiovascular disease
• Women are more likely to have strokes than men, in fact THREE million women die from strokes each year
• Under the age of 50, women’s heart attacks are twice as likely to be fatal
• 267,00 women die annually from heart attacks, this is SIX times as many fatalities as breast cancer

Did you know: the tradition of Groundhog’s Day dates back to the mid 17^th century? A German shopkeeper in Pennsylvania noted that on this day, if it’s sunny and the groundhog sees his shadow he will return to hibernation for 6 more weeks of winter.  If the day is cloudy and he cannot see his shadow, he ends his hibernation and spring is expected right around the corner.  Famous weatherman woodchuck, Punxsutawney Phil’s “Inner Circle” swears that he’s never been wrong!

Well this morning Phil did in fact see his shadow!  This means 6 more weeks of winter…but with the “winter” most of the country has seen this year, spring nursing scrubs may just be appropriate!
